I caught the tail end of a protest by second line organizers pushing back against proposed NOPD crackdowns on parading. Wouldn’t have known about it at all if not for my photographer buddy Sophia Germer, who mentioned she was covering it.
I’d all but given up hope of seeing a second line this trip—turns out arriving in late summer puts you about 180 degrees out of sync with second line season. So this was a lucky alignment.
These stunning photos are all Sophia’s (she shoots for the Picayune-Times). I took some shots too, but after seeing her work, I had to reevaluate my life.
The music you hear is the New Groove Brass Band playing the last song of the protest. One last second line before the storm?
